In Mourning

A series of works which deal with a very personal loss. Cole's mother, Patricia Anne Cole died in 2016 and then his father, Barry John Cole, died in 2017. For a long time after their loss, and even with the passing of time, finding the words to express the feelings after they died felt next to impossible.

These paintings try to express this loss, with some of them fundamentally cathartic, attempting to capture and work through the sense of unreality; the sense that something fundamental was missing from a world which was not the same as before. The paintings are also meant to function as a monument and memorial which will exist after their death. They are a legacy of their existence and a way of remembering who they were, what they did and what they meant.
