Coleman creates large-scale watercolour paintings that address urban disjunction. Each landscape is a hybrid topography which contains ambiguously competing forces: the built and natural environments, privilege and disadvantage, myth and reality. Coleman often employs a cross-sectional cut which provides simultaneous views into adjacent but disparate spaces, thus allowing for an exploration into these juxtapositions and threshold conditions.

Coleman paints with watercolours to reference the vocational and  “picturesque” connotations attached to the medium. These watercolour paintings suggest a kind of field study in which the subjects have been documented for research or nostalgic purposes. Coleman’s formal use of this medium often used for sketching reflects his attention to seemingly lowbrow or gritty subjects: the weathered architecture, graffiti and detritus.

A British-born American painter, Coleman has recently relocated from New York to London. His newest works engage with the British landscape tradition in paintings of everyday South London, fraught with themes of Britishness: exclusion and transplantation, observed through the immersive gauze of contemporary politics.
